Do you have a house alarm system?
With a young family to protect, reports of shed and garage robberies in my street and travellers in the area recently, I'm starting to think this may be a good idea.

Anyone got one? Do they give peace of mind?

Something like this any good?

Thanks

Yep had one for few yrs.
Does give piece of mind but no guarantee you won't be burgled.

Those ones are fine just having an alarm box outside is enough to deter a burglar .

Cheers Ern - Sure it wont guarantee the house being targetted, but it may reduce that risk

Re: Do you have a house alarm system?
There's always easier targets close by especially if your neighbours don't have alarms

Burgalr that sees you have an alarm will wonder what it is you have worth nicking that you're protecting so much.

Just go to bed leaving the doors and windows wide open, and your house will become invisiible.

Only half joking. I had a French mate who in Paris always left his windows open on his car when parking on the street and not once had anything stolen, even though you'd often see broken windows on cars that have been roobed.

We've had one for over 25 years it's a bit antiquated but still works and thankfully we have been ok.

Hmmmm shouldn't have said that !!!!!!

Re: Do you have a house alarm system?
when anyone hears an alarm nowadays nobody thinks "oh those poor people they may be getting robbed lets ring the police"

People think "turn that fucking alarm off you cunts"

so I'm not sure they do much good

Re: Do you have a house alarm system?
I have an ADT monitored alarm. If someone is determined to rob you then they will find a way/won't be put off. Only time it has really gone off properly was when me and the missus were in bed a couple of years back, alarm woke us up, I went down stairs to find someone trying to get in through the front door probably trying to get keys to cars.

Re: Do you have a house alarm system?
It's my game, if you go wireless don't go DIY, opt for something like a Visonic power ax complete kit and add whatever extra sensors you need. Usually allow for 1 PIR sensor in each room and a front door contact..
Don't put sensors directly above radiators or in areas of direct sunlight.
Any pets need restricting to an area which is not covered by PIRs ( pet friendly is available) but usually just de sensitises detectors.

Definitely works as a deterrent, even more so when put in professionally.
Good luck

Depends on how well you get on with your neighbours. Round here they'll investigate.

Re: Do you have a house alarm system?
We have one and touch wood been alright so far

Both neighbors either side do too, and burglaries are on the up in our area yet we've been fine. Next door did have someone trying to get over their side gate and into their garage though.....so make sure your garage is secure as the thieves know they can house alot of valuable goods nowadays

GBHammer63...

I've just moved into a new build apartment in a block of 6.
they've put a 'trade' entry button on the main door. it's on a timer and can only open the door between 8:00 and 15:00, so that's when I'm at work and my place is empty, so been thinking about an alarm.

are there specific systems for apartments?

Re: Do you have a house alarm system?
I have one of those Yale systems, and I've fitted one at my parents', Mrs OTB's sister's, her granddad's and a friend's house. I also installed CCTV at mine and my parents' after my car was nicked from outside my house.

It being DIY means it's not going to be as good as one you pay for monthly, but it's done the job for us - they're good value. My parents live in Emerson Park and there have been loads (no exaggeration) of burglaries in their street on the ones around it, but their house remains untouched - there's no doubt that the alarm and cameras make it much less attractive to break into.

I'm not aware of so many burglaries in my part of Hornchurch (we don't have Neighbourhood Watch so there's no-one spreading the news) but I'm on the end of the road and had no bother since.

Re: Do you have a house alarm system?
Reminds me of a couple of incidents one when a neighbour was burgled, didnt hear anything they found the alarm bell box buried in the back garden.

The other my father in law RIP, once owned 80s a hotel in central london and had his own room. He woke up around 3am to a noise at the window and when he drew the curtains there was a burglar staring at him who had been trying to get in. Shocked his instant reaction was to punch the burglar forgetting the glass was there and the man fell, 3rd floor, had scaled the drainpipe at rear of building there was blood next morning on the grass, dont know how he survived from such a height, must have done some serious damage.

Re: Do you have a house alarm system?
Had one installed about a month ago, got a "special offer".............I'm sure they are still about.

European firm trying to muscle in over here, Verisure, paid £299 for a fully wireless system with 3 cameras, sensors, control pad, remote monitoring and an app for my phone where I can check the rooms where the cameras are placed.

Ongoing monthly cost, £40
